On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) we are honoured to be the hosts of the 44th United Nations Inter-Agency Games (UNIAG). We are delighted to confirm that the Games will take place, here at the home of the IAEA, in Vienna, Austria 3 - 7 May 2017.

Widely known as the world’s “Atoms for Peace” organization within the United Nations family, the IAEA is the international centre for cooperation in the nuclear field. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The IAEA headquarters are located in the Vienna International Centre (VIC) which we share with our colleagues from UNOV/UNODC, UNIDO and CTBTO. The VIC is easily accessible using public transport with a Metro (“Ubahn”) stop in front of the VIC. We are fortunate to have a sports facility, the “Sports Centre Donau City”, within walking distance from the VIC, which can facilitate approximately 80% of the UNIAG disciplines. The remaining facilities will be within easy access by public transport.

The Official website and IAG Facebook page will provide detailed information on the Games and will be constantly updated leading up to the date of the Games.

Competitions in the following disciplines will be held at the 44th IAGs:

Athletics Men and Women, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Chess, Cricket, Darts, Football Men and Women, Golf, Petanque, Pool-Billiards (Eight Ball), Swimming Men and Women (to be confirmed), Squash, Table Tennis Men and Women, Tennis, Volleyball Men and Women.

Please note that a minimum of 4 teams per discipline is required for competitions to take place.

There is no supplementary green fee for golf competition participants during the two competition days. However, optional practice rounds must be paid by participants themselves at the golf club directly.

As many of you will know, Vienna is a great city, with a rich history, wonderful architecture, and plenty to see and do. However, as most other capital cities, Vienna also hosts many international conferences and meetings which make securing large-scale hotel accommodation difficult.

With this in mind, the IAG Organizing Committee (IAGOC), with the support of the UNIAG Secretariat, has decided to propose a new concept for the IAG 2017 and to exclude hotel accommodation from the usual UNIAG package. This means that in addition to the travel to and from Vienna, accommodation will be left to participants to arrange themselves.

Please see the list of recommended hotels on the website.

Each participant and supporter will be provided with a public transport ticket (underground, trams and buses) valid for the duration of the Games as part of the IAG package (see costs below). The public transport in Vienna is not only very reliable, but also extremely easy to navigate around the city.  We will of course have colleagues on hand at the Vienna Airport and the Vienna Main Railway Station to guide and hand over the transport tickets to participants arriving on 3 May 2017.

For those arriving earlier or driving to Vienna, further details will be posted on the website.

Although this is a change from the usual practice, we feel that this will provide participants with greater flexibility given the varied accommodation options available in Vienna and ensure an affordable price of the IAG for each participant based on their accommodation preferences.

To help in arranging accommodation, the IAGOC has negotiated some special prices at hotels near the main sports facility and these can be found on the website. However, please note that these rooms are limited and participants are encouraged to book their travel and hotel accommodation as soon as possible. In addition to the hotels listed, participants can also find a wide range of options via the usual hotel booking websites.

All participants and supporters must register for the Games exclusively via the designated “registrar” of their respective Organizations/Agencies. No direct registration will be accepted or considered. We would like to remind all participants and their respective registrars, that participants requiring visas should only be registered once their visa has been approved.  Early visa application is therefore recommended as approval time for Schengen zone visas, if needed, varies from country to country. We are ready to provide assistance to those requiring an official UNIAG invitation. The Austrian authorities have already been informed of the planned event, and upon request we will prepare an invitation letter to those requiring a Schengen type C Visa. For this, your respective Focal Point or Registrar would have to complete and submit the Visa Assistance Form.

The Opening Ceremony will take place in the Vienna International Centre, and it is here that all players and supporters will be issued with their official IAG ID (Player or Supporter). However, players will only receive their ID if their names are listed on the certified HR list submitted by the respective Organizations/Agencies well in advance in accordance with the General Rules of the IAG.

Any registered participant whose name is not on the official certified lists will be provided with a Supporter ID, and will not be allowed to participate in the sporting competitions themselves.

The UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) recommends that each participant should register in the common security system. This would allow for UNDSS to know who is at the Games and to react efficiently in case of any unexpected event. We strongly encourage individuals to register into the system which is available here and create a request in TRIP. If you are not already registered, you may need to create a new profile.

The package price per participant (including family and supporters) will be € 250.00 per person. This will include overall participation, all discipline facilities and organization and attendance during the 44th UNIAG, the opening and closing ceremonies (food and drinks included), drinks (refreshments) during sports competitions, welcome package, discounts on leisure and cultural attractions, public transportation tickets and security and safety.

Children aged 0-5 years will be free of charge, 6-11 years will be charged € 100.00 each, and those above 12 years of age € 250.00 each.

Further information will be posted on the Official website and the IAG Facebook page which will be continuously updated with information leading up to the date of the Games.

If you have any further questions, please channel these through your respective registrar/focal point.

The deadline for registration and payment will be Friday, 7 April 2017.

The bank account details will be provided to all focal points by e-mail.

The following conditions will apply with regard to cancellations:

  • For cancellations by 7 April 2017: 100% Refund
  • For cancellations by 14 April 2017: 50% Refund
  • There will be no refunds for cancellations after 14 April 2017.

All the best with your preparations.

We look forward to welcoming you to Vienna in May.
