  1. Hello,
Indeed as per Andrew’s comment would it be possible to get the timing of the results for example in swimming so we can get an idea of the level and we know what we are getting ourselves into.
Also it would be nice to name the participants

  2. could be have the result in terms of the individual timing vs distance in each discipline? for example the 50m freestyle in swimming. It’s always good to know the “real result” to prepare for the next game..

  3. How come the women football is not listed here? I think it is very important to show the results and promote it since it is a new discipline, and hopefully more teams can join next year.

  4. Where an organization can field a team from within its ranks, so much the better, and this would accord with IAG General Rules. However, many collective sports such as Basketball and Volleyball with the need for teams of several players and substitutes in physically demanding disciplines require multi-organization teams, even some with multiple duty stations, otherwise, there would be no team. With reductions in recruitment across the UN organization family over the last two-three decades, there is no other way to form a team in such sports.

  5. Why are there so many mixed Organisation teams? Is every effort made (as according to the IAG rules) to ensure that a team is made up exclusively from members of one Organisation before mixing them all together? My gut feeling suggests this practice is not followed, but if there are rules in place why are they being broken? Perhaps an audit would shed light on this…

    • Hi Jean,
This was a concern and it was raised with the Control Commission this year. In fact, some teams were changed in order to avoid unfair advantages and ensure organizations compete as one. Going forward this will be observed much closer in the future.
      All the best
      Steven

      • Partner Agencies (UNDP, UNWOMEN, UNICEF, UNOPS…) have traditionally been under represented due some of the reasons above that were eluded to. Not so much any nefarious practices, but the #1 reason being staff are not supported in these initiatives, so the “Olympics” are in actuality, missing some real good competitors from specific agencies, because some agencies don’t have a corporate sponsorship or support as other agencies (often a few ringers from agencies are asked to play on diff agency with more representation so then of course no recognition for them). It is difficult for any staff member (let alone a team of 6-10 staff) to come up with the nearly $1000usd for registration and peripherals, let alone request time off (often using ones personal leave) and travel expenses.
This is unfortunate. I’m wondering how other agency’s fund their players? Is it subsidized? Do they give DSA/Travel entitlements? These are not rhetorical questions, I really would like to know.

In NYC-HQ, the UN and sister agencies have amazing women’s and men’s volleyball and basketball players that for decades, are unable to compete (I really believe they could not be beaten in the IAG if they played)…even when the games are held in NY…the price point is just too out of reach for a even NY based staff members to pay/play…. We’ve often wondered how the same agencies keep winning…could it be they have corporate backing, so players can just focus on representing their fullest?

        • Good day,
On this 6 April 2022, International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was convened by the UN senior colleagues and they spoke about “The Role of Sport in Combating Climate Change”. I reached out to them with my concerns that apart incurring the total cost of travel, food and accommodation, the participant has to pay a hefty registration charge. Where in any international sports meetup participants are made to pay for registration? It looks like a traditional stereotyped gaming gathering of sports loving UN staff. >>>

          Dear Madams,
Since you take questions and suggestions from audience you address, I thought of reaching you out with some when I saw the UN Broadcast on “The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace Day on 6Apr2022”, the day you will be speaking on the role of sport to drive social changes and community development, and to foster peace and understanding.

I like to pivot following touchpoints for your reviewing:

          a) While you are talking about “incentivize actions”, the fact of the matter is UN-IA GAMES organizer-hosts are charging participants registration cost of USD 325 and USD 425 (for Golf) apart all other costs fully borne by the participating staff. Thus, the UN-IA GAMES is a self-financed meet-up. For promoting the UN-IA GAMES as the IDSDP showcases the role of sports, dynamic funding schemes and policies should be brought to the table. While all Staff Welfare Funds have been closed years ago, the mechanism of funding UN-IA GAMES should be reviewed. There can be more direct financial advantages in hosting the UN-IA GAMES with external biding by donors from the sports dogma. It can help obtain a substantial budget. The UN sport goodwill ambassadors playing in UN-IA GAMES can popularize the UN-IA GAMES for the hosting country citizens, they would like to watch prominent sports events. UN-IA GAMES can compete with any other world sports standards for example World University Games (https://www.fisu.net/news/future-world-university-games-hosts-come-together-for-brainstorming ); thus the farther milestones can be achieved apart joining the sports lover at any great locations at their own costs.

          b) The “IAG Leave Policy.pdf” is dated back to year 20-Apr-2005, evidently stands a proportionate review and revision. It is imperative that the Travel days’ time should be also included in the special paid leaves for the participants.

          c) The UN-IA GAMES should also be bannered with the objectives of the IDSDP.

Happy World Table Tennis Day – 6 April 😊
